Beautiful poem I translated for class...

“The Night of the Mirrors”

By: Hila Sedighi

Translated by: moi

It’s night,

My hands are bound,

All bridges behind me, broken,

I shall drag my head to the gallows.

Someone is sitting by the mirrors

This night where the guardians of the door

Accuse me of killing one of theirs

Consciously, they pull me with bound hands

Towards those present in the courtroom

They have written my sins in their minds

They have made mud out of me

They wouldn’t even allow me my voice

They just sowed and reaped this by themselves

Someone who looked like me

Came from the door

Not from the door

Perhaps she came from inside me

From her,

The tragedies of my generation emerged

Someone complained about my heart

Spoke about my thousands of problems

Neither from yesterday nor today, not ours

He narrated my false dreams

They all saw, spoke, and heard

Though in the end, they reached their own conclusions

With the murder of a child, by God

They were to hang me

The mirrors and I were mourning the night

All lives reached the threshold of lips

I opened my mouth and spoke of pain

Of those lives that burn in fever

I sinned

I sinned

The sin of innocence

The sin of building in the ruins

The war of time exhausted me

Time like the ocean, and I a fish

No tonight, my imprisonment was concrete

My hands have been bound my entire life

There was never a way to destination

Even if there were, the driver was exhausted

My red heart destroyed my green head

My mind separated itself from my body

There would be no risk of death

For a mind that keeps on calculating

The same ones that militarized us

Opened the medicine of my wounds

The wound that was searching for a tumor

The same ones who militarized us at the time of sorrow

If my young soul has died inside of me

There are many more of these young victims

Amongst the chests of the people in the city

Is a tomb as small as a doll

All the mirrors shattered within each other

The thread of unspoken words ruptured

I didn’t say what I had to say

They shackled my wrists once again

It’s night and with my bound hands,

All bridges behind me, broken,

I shall drag my head to the gallows.

Someone is sitting by the mirrors
