Expectations

Is it just me or are our expectations just based on our experiences with people? Just the other day you would expect your loved one to surprise you with the sweetest gift or simply flowers for an anniversary or birthday. Now, all the sudden, you rejoice when he just remembers it.

People wonder why I'm so skeptical when it comes to relationships. Is it possible for a woman to live in New York City and not become a skeptic who questions every step of the way and is unsure to just accept a hand of friendship and is totally pessimistic when it comes to marriage? Maybe this is not just about living in this city, maybe it's America all together. Just look at the media itself; TV shows, movies... Hollywood in general tends to always end in a "happy ending" scenerio though it defines the common problems of men or women seeking love. I guess it's just not New York then because even in Iran when you open a magazine, you read stories and stories of how a girl trusted a guy only to be betrayed in the end. This guy could be her husband, her boyfriend, or even her brother or father. Don't get me wrong, men also have their own misconceptions and cynical views about women. They just don't seem to dwell on it much as we do. Heck, there are more women in this world than men isn't it? So I guess for guys, it's always like: ok if not this one, then probably the next. It is for women that it's a big deal. There are just only a handful of guys that can fit the description of a "good guy" in a woman's mind.

I always try not to have any sort of expectations honestly when it comes to people, or even about situations to say the least. Every time I look forward to a movie, a show, a song, or even an event, for some reason, I'm always let down. I guess it's pretty obvious that when you have really high expectations for something or someone, that's when you're screwed over. But how do we not have expectations? You only give so much of your time and effort to make something work that in the end, these expectations just build up. Like when moms give birth to, raise, and give love to their children, they expect to be respected by them in the least... Or when a teacher spends so much time making the lesson plan in the way that all students learn in the best possible way, he/she expects the student to at least pay attention to the concepts that he/she so carefully prepared for them... Or when at work, you do your best to getting the job done while respecting all job ethics, you expect a fair treatment from your boss... Or when you, as a citizen work so hard for your country and give so much of your life and efforts, you expect to be treated in a humane way by being able to freely express yourself and not be killed for it...

.... Or when you are so careful to saying the right thing and spend all night making up poor excuses for his mistakes and just trying to be...better, you expect him to fight for you, no matter what.
